In an agency theory, the power is institutionally directed while in the stewardship, it is based on personal ability and power to run the particular organization. Davis, et al (1997) argue that the two theories are not mutually exclusive but create a link between agency and stewardship relationships.
Thus the biggest difference between agency theory and stewardship theory is the approach to motivation. The situational factors in stewardship theory are: trust, engagement, collectivism and low power distance. In contrast, in the agency theory these factors are: control mechanisms, individualism, and high power distance (Beata Glinkowska,2015).
Agency theory has been defined as the fundamental approach to a theory of supervisory behavior (Ross 1987), whereas stewardship theory has been defined as the administrative behavior balance the action of theories in management (Davis, Donaldson and Schoorman 1997a).Even within the company, interest can be categorized into two theories: agency theory and stewardship theory. Agency theory focuses on fixing the misalignment between shareholders and the board of directors in the running of the company. The primary difference between agency theory and stewardship theory is the purpose of business. In agency theory, the purpose of business is to build shareholder wealth. In stewardship theory, it is to promote the well-being of society. Stewardship theory is much more of an altruistic approach to business than agency theory.
