There are many barriers to critical thinking. Barriers can distort your thinking a great deal. The way we are raised by our parents when we are children can determine our religion, our political views, the way we view the world, and ultimately shapes our thinking and who we are as individuals.
One of the most common barriers to critical thinking is the lack of relevant and adequate background information (Paul and Elder 60). I have experienced this problem severally especially when faced with exams that I have not adequately prepared. In such a situation, I do not have the information required to answer a question adequately.
The second barrier that influences my critical thinking is lack of relevant background information or ignorance. Without enough information it is hard to be a critical thinker, have thoughts on the matter, or base your opinion. With a lack of information you do not have the whole story, therefore having a gap in your critical thinking.It fosters creativity, boosts language skills and improves the way ideas are presented There are four types of external barriers.
